Dive with Purpose. Advance Shark Science. Protect What Matters.

Dive with Purpose. Advance Shark Science. Protect What Matters. •

APRIL 26TH-May 1st, 2026

This 5 day expedition seeks to engage volunteers in marine conservation as they assist in shark diving experiences, data collection, and education. Volunteers will actively contribute to two existing shark research databases by collecting shark identification and population data. With and without their fins on, volunteers will learn from local experts, participate in workshops, and connect with like-minded ocean enthusiasts. Join us to snorkel and dive in one of the ocean’s most dynamic ecosystems to collect data on these incredible animals!

Behind the Science

Fig. 1: A bull shark named “Joker” off the coast of Jupiter, FL identified by natural markings and sex. This shark was first identified in 2021 and was re-sighted in 2024.

We are partnering with American Shark Conservancy to contribute data from this expedition to their comprehensive, non-invasive survey efforts. ASC monitors shark populations in southeast Florida while working alongside local shark dive operators. Their shark survey uses standardized methods to document species presence, abundance, sex, and length and has been used to help inform federal policy.

Data collected on this expedition will support conservation efforts through enhancing our understanding of local shark populations and their relationship to local dive sites.

Alongside Florida Shark Diving, Twin Fins Alliance is developing a photo identification database of bull sharks off of Jupiter, FL based on natural markings and sex (Fig. 1). This database will help describe bull shark migration patterns to and from an area with high human activity, and fill in critical gaps in the understanding of bull shark distribution.

 FAQs

  • Your data will become part of American Shark Conservancy’s ongoing research database and our developing database dedicated to understanding and protecting sharks. All expedition profits go directly to Twin Fins Alliance to continue to support our research.

  • No, this is a volunteer research expedition. As such, it is not a catered experience. Whatever species we see will be wonderful data points, but if the weather is bad, we cannot issue refunds. These are our goals:

    1) Ensure safety of volunteers

    2) Collect volunteer data for the listed research projects

    3) For everyone to have fun and see as many sharks as possible

  • Unfortunately, we can’t control the weather, and safety always comes first. If conditions make diving unsafe, we may need to adjust our dive plans. In such cases we’ll make sure your experience is still rewarding. We will plan a variety of alternative activities that allow you to build skills, take part in conservation research, and explore Jupiter wildlife.

  • Shark diving is safe with professionals who understand shark behavior. Diana, one of our expedition leaders, together with Florida Shark Diving, brings years of hands-on knowledge and a spotless safety record. While sharks are apex predators and can be dangerous, every dive is carefully managed to ensure the safety of both divers and sharks, allowing you to enjoy an unforgettable and responsible experience. It’s also important to remember, we are not on their menu; the sharks we dive with are eating small fish and are often quite cautious around large animals.

  • You must be a strong swimmer and have snorkeling experience. A scuba certification is not mandatory - we will cater to both snorkelers and scuba divers. You do not need any prior shark diving or science experience to join!

  • Spring in Florida is an excellent time of year to see a variety of sharks including bull, sandbar, lemon, Caribbean reef, and hammerhead sharks.

  • We will be diving everyday in the morning to early afternoon, and then have time in the afternoon for data input/analysis, workshops, and exploration of Jupiter. Everyday will be a different combination of diving, science, community connection, and adventure!

  • Click the book now button to be directed to our booking platform. You’ll fill out a quick questionnaire, and then be contacted with instructions to book! To reserve your spot, a nonrefundable deposit of $500 will be due at the time of booking, with the subsequent payment due in two two later installments.

  • We will have three days of shark snorkel data collection and one day of scuba for those that are certified.

  • You must be Advanced Open Water with Nitrox certification.

  • Air temperature typically ranges from the mid 70s to low 80s and ocean temperatures from the high 70s to low 80s. The visibility this time of year is excellent, averaging 80+ feet.

  • For the freedives, all equipment will be provided (mask, snorkel, fins, gloves). However, it is recommended that you bring any of your equipment that you are comfortable in. If you are scuba diving, you have the option to rent equipment at an additional cost. It is recommended to bring your own wetsuit or springsuit (water temp in the high 70’s).

  • Our accommodation has 7 beds, ensuring everyone has a comfortable place to rest!

  • After you book, we will be sending you resources (such as a packing list, recommended flights, etc) and helping you with anything that you need!

  • Travel insurance is not required, but it is recommended. If you are scuba diving, dive insurance is mandatory.

*Disclaimer*

Safety is our top priority, and we will only dive when weather conditions allow. If we are unable to dive due to unfavorable weather, we will offer alternative activities but there will be no refunds.
